A short overview to grasp social media marketing within minutes.
What is Social Media Marketing?
At face value, we can identify that social media marketing (also known as SMM), involves the use of social media platforms to market a product or service. But of course, it is more than just that. Investopedia defines social media marketing as, “a way to reach new customers, engage with existing customers, and promote their desired culture, mission, or tone.”
The core of social media marketing is that, it paves a way for businesses to reach customers online, through creating content that informs the targeted audience of the product, service and brand of a company. Such content is used to drive traffic, engagement, brand awareness and recognition. So it simply isn’t just utilizing online platforms, but also more on the strategy of how these platforms are best utilized that are in line with the overall digital marketing goals.
Take a look at what Buffer.com says about social media marketing, as it best describes the embodiment of it: “…use of social media platforms to connect with your audience to build your brand, increase sales, and drive website traffic. This involves publishing great content on your social media profiles, listening to and engaging your followers, analyzing your results, and running social media advertisements.”
On that note, why should we use social media for marketing?
Prior to the global outbreak of the novel corona virus, wearesocial.com’s report states:
- The number of people around the world using the internet has grown to 4.54 billion, an increase of 7 percent (298 million new users) compared to January 2019.
- Worldwide, there are 3.80 billion social media users in January 2020, with this number increasing by more than 9 percent (321 million new users) since this time last year.
- Globally, more than 5.19 billion people now use mobile phones, with user numbers up by 124 million (2.4 percent) over the past year.
Now that the pandemic has has taken over the world, it is estimated that
the number of users will surmount a whopping increase to 4.41 billion by 2025 as per statista.com‘s projections.
Today, we are only seeing the surface of how entrepreneurs are changing the way to do business in order to adapt to quarantine conditions. Making the shift to click and mortar set ups, coming from brick and mortar beginnings. A full report to this shift can be seen here.
Suffice to say, the more that people are diving into the internet and using social media, the wider our ocean of customers and target market we are able to tap into.
